FAIRLYNCH MUSEUM

Budleigh Salterton Museum and Collections

museum external

The town of Budleigh Salterton possesses one of the important costume collections in the country. For this reason alone a call at the Museum is a must for visitors to the town.

Local history is well represented and an exploration of the varied collections is a way for families with children to get more pleasure during their stay in the town.

The Museum is open daily from April to October (2.00pm - 4.30pm). The Fairlynch dedicated staff of volunteers wish you a pleasant and enjoyable day!

The Museum

Founded by a generous gift, the museum works through a management committee devoted to meeting the interest in local history and the specialised collections.

News

From EDDC: Since the loss of our specialist officer as part of the cuts some years ago, EDDC has helped its museums through Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. For a very small grant, the Exeter Museum provides curatorial advice to East Devon’s museums. Without such expert advice, our local museums would find it difficult to demonstrate their credibility to their funding bodies.
East Devon Museums Group (the association of 6 East Devon Museums) is very active and is seen as an important contributor to the ‘Jurassic Coast’ brand. As a first step in improving marketing, the Museums group used an organisation called ‘Imaginarium’ to carry out a visitor survey.
An interesting snapshot from the data follows:
The typical visitor to East Devon museums is female, aged at least 55, lives in the UK but not in the south west, who is staying with family or friends.
She is likely to be educated to degree level, and visits out of general interest having noticed the museum by walking past.
She will normally visit at least 6 museums per year, and enjoys her visit tremendously.
This report gives the museums a great deal of information on their current customer base, and what marketing may be effective to better target these as well as new visitors. The report also highlights existing good practice within our museums, and the need to see the museums as working together and not in competition with one-another.
A copy of this report is available from Peter Jeffs.

The museum is considering how to meet the challenges of the next decade. The well-attended open meeting held recently was very useful in providing many good ideas for development and this is now being actively considered by the Management Committee. There will be meetings shortly to announce plans for 2007

Volunteers Looking after important historical collections is a time-consuming work requiring many hands to make light work.
If you have an interest in local history do please approach a member of staff to indicate your willingness to join us.
There are several ways in which you may help. Particular professional skills are always welcome. Academic interest is also much in demand.

Group visits The house, one of the few thatched museums, was built in the early 19th century in the marine cottage orné style. The builder was a local ship owner who added a turret so that he could watch for his ships coming into the bay. The garden has been restored to show many plants which would have been grown in the 19th century.
